Keolis Downer is the proud operator of Yarra Trams, the oldest and largest light rail network in the world. Since 2009, Keolis Downer has significantly invested in Melbourne’s tram network and community. In November 2017, the Victorian Government has awarded Keolis Downer the contract to run Yarra Trams until at least 2024. This is an exciting time for the team at Yarra Trams as we begin delivery of our new franchise term.


In the next six years we will continue to bring our international expertise to Melbourne to ensure we continue to deliver even better, safer, more reliable passenger services and performance, while increasing the value of the tram network for Melburnians and the thousands of visitors to our city every day.


To deliver on these exciting new challenges, Yarra Trams is looking for an experienced Commercial Advisor to provide procurement and contract management advice and support to relevant stakeholders and support category management activities.


What the role entails

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Commercial Advisor. The role involves working within policies and procedures to support the development and implementation of category management plans to meet business needs and to enhance stakeholder engagement, as well as challenge and motivate providers to optimise service delivery and outcomes.


Reporting to the Commercial Category Manager, the role involves:

  • Ability to understand business systems, practices and processes and contribute to implementation of category management plans focusing on continuous improvement delivering efficiencies and improving productivity
  • Administration of procurement and contract management activities for the nominated category (including advice to contract / project managers on procurement policy and contractual provisions)
  • Managing the tendering process for the nominated category including tender documentation, issuing of tenders, tender clarification, tender submissions, probity and tender evaluation process
  • Managing the contract award process for the nominated category including preparation of contract documentation, approvals, execution, document control, bank guarantees and insurances
  • Co-ordinating and participating in negotiations with contractors, suppliers and tenderers as required
  • Ability to liaise effectively with all levels of the organisation and suppliers
  • Ability to proactively manage difficult and complex tasks within tight time frames
  • Self-motivated and ability to work autonomously with limited guidance and support
  • Excellent verbal and written communications (including drafting of tenders, contracts, contract handovers, formal and informal presentations, written communications and reports)
  • Present a professional manner to represent the organisation in an honest, ethical and professional way and set an example for others to follow


What you will need for this role

To be successful in this opportunity, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in procurement or other relevant technical or commercial/legal discipline
  • Good understanding of the interplay between contracts, operations and commercial outcomes
  • Demonstrated experience in procurement and contract management and supplier relationship management
  • Demonstrated experience in leading procurement processes and contract negotiations, ideally in a transport/infrastructure delivery/services environment
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Possess an understanding and awareness of Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental issues in the workplace
  • Understanding of asset management system (Maximo) an advantage
  • Experience in IT, facilities management or infrastructure services categories an advantage
