Keolis Downer is the proud operator of Yarra Trams, the oldest and largest light rail network in the world. Since 2009, Keolis Downer has significantly invested in Melbourne’s tram network and community. In September last year, the Victorian Government has awarded Keolis Downer the contract to run Yarra Trams until at least 2024. This is an exciting time for the team at Yarra Trams as we have begun delivery of our new franchise term.

To deliver on these exciting new challenges, Yarra Trams requires the services of an experienced Commercial Category Manager to provide leadership and direction in the procurement categories under management, including strategic sourcing planning and execution, supplier development and relationship management and contract and risk management activities, to meet business needs.

What the role entails
This position is a great opportunity for an experienced Commercial Category Manager to develop and realise procurement opportunities to deliver best value for money category outcomes that safeguard Yarra Trams’ commercial interests and Functional budgets.

Reporting to the Manager, Procurement, the role involves:
• Identifying strategic and critical suppliers and developing and implementing supplier relationship management plans;
• Leading the development of category strategies within major markets and incorporating input from senior stakeholders and technical functions to obtain agreement to overarching strategy;
• Leading sourcing activities for large, complex categories or projects and facilitating expert reference groups, including for cross-functional teams in the evaluation of organisation-wide agreements;
• Applying best practice procurement negotiation thinking and practice across the organisation;
• Management of contracts in cooperation with technical expert and resolution of commercial and contractual disputes;
• Leading small number of Commercial Advisor(s) and leadership to technical purchasing resources.

What you will need for this role
To be successful in this role, you will have:
• Tertiary qualifications in procurement or other relevant technical or commercial/legal discipline;
• Over 5 years’ experience in procurement and contract negotiations;
• Demonstrable experience in people management and leading cross functional teams;
• Demonstrable experience in leading major tender processes for subcontracts, ideally in a transport/infrastructure delivery/services environment;
• Proven experience in preparing and delivering strategic plans for a category or in a procurement environment;
• Strong financial skills, including financial data analysis and modelling;
• An understanding of asset management system (Maximo) an advantage;
• Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills;
• Strong verbal and written communications (including formal and informal presentations, written communications and reports);
• Sound understanding of risk management principles.
